The official residence in Scotland of Her Majesty the Queen which stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. The Palace is perhaps best known as the home of Mary, Queen of Scots, and as the setting for many of the dramatic episodes in her turbulent reign. Today the State Apartments are used regularly by The Queen and other members of the Royal Family for State ceremonies and official entertaining. The Royal Apartments reflect the changing tastes of successive monarchs and are renowned for their fine plasterwork ceilings and magnificent furnishings, particularly the unrivalled collection of Brussels tapestries. One of the most famous rooms in the Palace is the Great Gallery, hung with Jacob de Wet's portraits of the real and legendary kings of Scotland. Following your visit you will take a short stroll to The Edinburgh Carlton Hotel on the Royal Mile where you can enjoy your afternoon tea and a refreshing glass of champagne.

The Palace stands at the end of Edinburgh's Royal Mile against the spectacular backdrop of Arthur's Seat. This fine baroque palace is closely associated with Scotland's rich history. One of the most famous rooms in the Palace is the Great Gallery, hung with Jacob de Wet's portraits of the real and legendary kings of Scotland. After exploring the history of the palace you will then enjoy a luxury afternoon tea in the Bridge Lounge at The Edinburgh Carlton Hotel including a fine selection of teas, finger sandwiches, rich butter scones and a cold glass of champagne.

  • Minimum age: 18
  • A reasonable level of fitness is desirable as some walking is involved
  • As Holyroodhouse is a historical building there are some areas with difficult stairs and other areas where wheelchair access is limited
  • If you have any disability or illness that may prevent you from taking part in the experience you should discuss this with the centre before booking
  • Please also advise the centre on booking of any dietary requirements 
  • Holyroodhouse is open daily from 1st November – 31st March between 9.30am - 4.30pm (last admission 3.30pm) and from 1st April – 31st October between 9.30am - 6pm (last admission 5pm)
  • Confirmed closure dates for Holyroodhouse in 2010 are 25 and 26th December. The palace will also be closed during Royal visits. Additional closure days may apply. Please call for full details
  • Tea is served daily in the Bridge Lounge at The Edinburgh Carlton Hotel between 12.00pm and 5.00pm
  • Please note that all Official Residences of The Queen are working Royal Palaces. Opening arrangements may change at short notice. Please check before planning a visit
  • As a guideline, you should allow approximately one and a half hours for your visit to the Palace but there is no limit to the visiting time. The approximate time for afternoon tea is 1-2 hours
