A potent symbol of the life of the nation, St Paul’s has absorbed the hopes, fears, sorrows and joys of generations; an enduring symbol of both the past and the present. Although the present cathedral was rebuilt after the great fire of London in 1666 and has just celebrated its 300th anniversary of completion, a cathedral has stood on this site, overlooking the City of London, since 604AD.
Majestic, timeless and atmospheric, St Paul’s welcomes many thousands of visitors through its doors each year for services, concerts, debates, educational events, performing arts and sightseeing. Recently transformed by state-of-the-art restoration techniques, the light flooding the internal space of the cathedral highlights the luminescent Portland stone and brings mosaics, carvings, paintings and sculpture to life. Visitors and worshippers can witness Wren’s original vision and see his cathedral as crisp and magnificent as the day it was completed. Gazing up into Wren’s crowning glory, the lofty and awe-inspiring Dome of St Paul’s, is just one of the highlights of a visit to this remarkable cathedral. Take time to visit another highlight, the crypt, to view the many tombs and memorials to world-famous Britons, including Lord Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.
The pinnacle of any trip to St Paul's has to be the winding journey up the spiral staircase to the Whispering Gallery to sample its unique acoustic effects before travelling up and out to the Stone and Golden Galleries, which afford a panoramic view of London that is one of the best in the capital.
All visitors can now take advantage of a new inclusive multimedia guide, available in 11 different languages, as well as British Sign Language. The cathedral has also recently opened a new permanent video exhibition in the crypt, Oculus – an Eye into St Paul’s, which brings 1400 years of history to life through a 270° high definition film experience. Guided tours are now included and scheduled throughout the day, lasting 90 minutes and taking in some of the hidden areas of the cathedral; visitors can join these on the day.
Complement your visit with a cream tea in the Restaurant at St Paul’s. Enjoy your choice from a refreshing range of loose leaf teas or fair-trade coffee; a freshly baked scone with England preserve and Cornish clotted cream.
