This workshop is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the fascinating world of close-up photography. Working in a very small group of only two or three photographers you will be guided through the challenges and opportunities that nature close-up photography offers. Following an introductory tutorial we will move into the studio for some rare chances to take pictures of unusual animal subjects. Using different sets and lighting techniques we will cover species such as Geckos, Chameleons, Tree Frogs and Praying Mantis. Guests will also have a chance to use our lighting and equipment and even handle some of the animals.

This experience is designed to give budding photographers of all levels of experience a challenging and informative day of macro studio photography using rare and unusual subjects. Because of the nature of this type of studio work Wild Arena only has a maximum of three photographers booked in on any day allowing them to spend time with every guest and ensuring everyone goes home with great pictures.
Upon arrival you will be provided with tea and coffee followed by a comprehensive briefing on the basics of macro followed by a summary of the problems and common solutions encountered when shooting smaller subjects. You will cover; choice of equipment, magnification ratios, depth of field, apertures and shutter speeds, managing light and use of flash. It is normal to photograph around six subjects (from a selection of over twenty varied species) and the tutor will demonstrate top lighting, side lighting and back lighting using various pieces of the extensive studio lighting system. Guests are obviously able to use this equipment to get the best images and they even have loan digital SLR’s and macro lenses for Nikon and Canon in case of difficulties.
The day is fully inclusive of admission, tuition, lunch and refreshments.

  • Minimum age: under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult 
  • This experience is available all year round. Start times are approximately 10.00am and finish approximately 4.00pm
  • The experience requires no qualifications and is suitable for all guests interested in photography and animals
  • You will need to take your own camera
  • Disable access is available

  • Please note: we cannot guarantee that all the animals listed in the information will be seen on the day of your experience
